Lotte Songdo Mall Complex
The Lotte Mall Songdo is a multi-program complex of retail, entertainment and hospitality located in the commercial heart of the South Korean Songdo International Business District (New Songdo City).
The design by Studio Libeskind consists of bold, solid volumes that seem to float like glacier rocks on a bed of ice. The transparent plinth of glass provides an open street front, inviting the public to enter the shopping center from all main directions. The site is adjacent to a central park and two major thoroughfares, and is linked to the subway via the main circulation artery.
The raised monolith volumes anchor the main corners, instilling light throughout the public space and forming the confines of a secluded roofscape; a green urban oasis to serve as a refuge for both shoppers and hotel guests.
While working at Studio Libeskind, Bouwery’s Johan van Lierop was the lead designer of the Songdo Mall complex.
